TEN staff of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) in August 21, 2019 benefitted from a policy analysis training conducted by Economic Policy Research Centre staff.
The training aimed at mentoring UBOS statisticians to undertake policy analysis and develop policy briefs. According to the EPRC Director Research, Dr. Ibrahim Kasirye, the training is a component of a collaboration term collaboration between UN Women and Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC) on technical back-stopping for generation of gender analysis knowledge products.
The instructor-led in-class training was held at the EPRC premises in the conference room and also benefitted a number of research analysts. On July 16, 2019 EPRC and UN WOMEN entered into a contract where EPRC is expected to provide technical backstopping to UN WOMEN to generate gender analysis knowledge products.This falls uder the Global UN Women Flagship Initiative Programme:Making Every Woman and Girl Count(MEWGC);Supporting Monitoring and Implementation of SDGs through better production and use of Gender Statistics 2019.
The programme objective is to ensure that National Statistical Systems to attain the required capacity to produce quality,comparable,regular and accessible gender statistics in line with international standards.This is expected to achieve strengthened production of gender statistics to enable the monitoring of national policies and reporting committments under the SDGs.
During the project duration spanning July 2019-December 2020, EPRC is expected to deliver on several milestones including the writing of several policy briefs, training 10 statisticians from UBOS in policy analysis and development of policy briefs, finalizing certain draft issue papers and peer reviewing papers in preparation for Annual Gender Statistics Forum (AGSFIII).
Other expected deliverables are holding policy dialogues, data mining and analysis of administrative data on gender-based violence (GBV), collecting and analyzing data on budget allocations to gender and preparing reports among others.
The training of UBOS at EPRC was conducted by Dr. Madina Guloba who made a presentation on writing an effective policy analysis paper, Dr. Mildred Barungi on How to effectively write a policy briefs and Ms Florence Nakazi who conducted practical hands-on sessions.
