Economic and Social Upgrading in the Mobile Telecommunications Industry: The case of MTN
This paper presents highlights of the Mobile Telecommunications Industry (MTI) in Uganda, specifically focusing on the case of MTN Uganda. It examines the growth and contribution of the MTI to the Ugandan economy. The paper also considers work condition related issues of MTN Uganda, addressing all parts of the value chain. Overall, the transformation of the MTI in Uganda has created gains for the economy and individuals. The sector is making commendable contributions to employment, revenue and growth. Though limited data were available regarding working conditions, there is a clear difference between conditions of the workers of the core MTN Uganda, fixed term workers and outsourced workers. While conditions of work among MTN Uganda employees are, on average, better than elsewhere in Uganda, they may not meet the ILO decent work framework. Among developmental aspects of the company, the most significant is the mobile money system/services, which has integrated more users (especially from the rural population) into Uganda's financial system at a reasonable cost. Money transfer is an innovation that has revolutionised lives but is still nascent, requiring strong legislation to protect interests of stakeholders.
