Community Expectations and Environmental Aspects in Uganda's Oil and Gas Sector

Community Expectations and Environmental Aspects in Uganda's Oil and Gas Sector

The discovery of abundant mineral resources has raised popular expectations that Uganda will have abundant financial means for social economic transformation and poverty reduction. However, it also poses some long-term environmental risks to Uganda. This policy brief explains the potential impacts of oil activities on communities and their environment and also discusses the expectations of the communities with regard to the oil discoveries. The extent to which oil and gas development negatively affects the environment and the communities could depend on the size of extractive activities, sensitivity of location, and even the technology used. With Uganda recording huge successes with its exploration efforts, and given the ecological sensitivity of the exploration areas, it is important that due attention be accorded to the environmental consequences, if the country is to optimize value from the extraction of oil resources.
