The Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC) is Uganda’s leading economics research institution. Its mandate is to provide research and other forms of analytical support to Uganda’s development process. EPRC uses resources from Government of Uganda and Think Tank Initiative (TTI) under the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The Centre is searching for qualified, experienced persons with sound professional integrity to fill the positions indicated below.


1. Job title: Senior Research Fellow- Microeconomics (1 post)

Reports to: Principal Research Fellow
Age limit: 35- 55 years

Main Duties
a) Undertake empirical analysis of microeconomic issues
b) Contribute to resource mobilization and engage in commissioned work for and on behalf of the Centre
c) Based on research findings and sound analysis, contribute to national policy discourse
d) Mentor and coach Research Analysts
e) Assist the Principle Research Fellow in advising the Executive Director and Senior Management Team on socio-economic, and sustainable development issues in Uganda.

Requirements for the position:
a) Hold at least a PhD in Economics, Agricultural Economics, Development Economics or other economics related field (by coursework and research) from a reputable University;
b) Publication record in international peer reviewed journals, or proven record of publications of reports, working papers and books, among others;
c) Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to apply modern micro-economic theory and methods;
d) Strong knowledge and background in the use of statistical and econometric methods and packages in development economics and microeconomics research; theoretical knowledge to develop and implement research programs;
e) Competence in the use of the leading econometric software (e.g. STATA, E-Views) for data analysis;
f) Proven ability in development policy research and analysis of economic conditions. A minimum of eight (8) years working experience in relevant reputable public or private sector institutions three of which should be in policy-oriented work;
g) A strong drive for results, an ability to carry out swiftly and efficiently numerous competing demands, and capable of managing competing priorities;
h) Excellent record of proposal writing and raising funds for policy-related research;
i) Proven ability to build and lead a team of motivated staff, and utilize the talents and expertise of team members in a productive way as well as capacity to initiate and manage innovation and change;
j) Professional experience of working in reputable research or academic institutions;
k) Ability to make presentations, engage in public speaking; and
l) Intellectual and personal integrity.


2. Research Fellow (1 Post)

Reports to: Senior Research Fellow
Age limit: 30- 45 years


Main Duties
a) Undertake empirical economic analysis;
b) Contribute to resource mobilization and engage in commissioned work for and on behalf of the Centre;
c) Engage in commissioned work for and on behalf of the Centre;
d) Based on research findings and sound analysis, contribute to national policy discourse


Requirements for the position:
a) Minimum of Master’s degree (by coursework and research) in Economics, Agricultural Economics
or other economics related field from a recognised University;
b) Recent graduates of doctoral degrees in (a) will have an added advantage;
c) Comprehensive knowledge of, and ability to apply modern economic theory and methods;
d) Strong analytical skills;
e) Knowledge of current global and national economic issues;
f) Proven high level writing skills as primary author in published research papers and reports;
g) Experience working with large household survey data sets;
h) Demonstrated ability to use STATA, E-Views, GAMS or GAUSS for data analysis;
i) A minimum of six (6) years working experience in relevant public or private sector institutions three
of which should be in policy-oriented work;
j) High-level interpersonal skills and good communication skills;
k) Self-motivation and capability to work under tight deadlines in a competitive environment; and
l) Unquestionable integrity.


3. Job Title: Research Analyst – Macroeconomics (1 Post)
Age Limit: 28-35years of age
Reports to: Senior Research Fellow
The Research Analyst program offers career development opportunities to holders of masters in economics, agricultural economics or related economic field.


Main Duties
a) Undertake empirical economic policy research and analysis
b) Engage in commissioned work for and on behalf of the Centre
c) Based on research findings and sound analysis, contribute to national policy discourse


Requirements for the position:
Candidates for the Research Analyst position should be Ugandans and must have the following:-
a) A Minimum of Master’s degree (by coursework and research) in economics, agricultural economics or related economic field from a recognized university;
b) Knowledge of current global and national economic issues;
c) Demonstrated ability to use STATA, EViews, GAMS or GAUSS for data analysis;
d) Excellent writing and presentation skills;
e) Work experience of at least 2 years in a reputable institution/ organization;
f) High-level interpersonal skills and good communication skills;
g) Willingness and ability to work to tight deadlines in a competitive environment; and
h) Unquestionable integrity.

The above positions are for three year contract period, with a possibility for renewal subject to satisfactory performance. 4. Position: Volunteer Programme
EPRC also wishes to recruit volunteers to support EPRC’s work by carrying out research projects and writing reports. The volunteer Programme will give recent Masters Graduates an opportunity to utilize the resources and facilities at EPRC and to work with EPRC researchers in areas of mutual interest.


What the Volunteer Programme Offers
a) You will be helping EPRC in its mission to foster sustainable growth and development of the Ugandan economy by advancing the role of research in policy processes.
b) An opportunity to spend at least one year at EPRC utilizing your existing skills whilst developing new ones. You will be working full time during the programme.
c) This may be the opportunity to link your postgraduate studies with a specific project that will benefit EPRC.
d) You will receive mentorship and gain an insight into the practices of conducting policy oriented research.
e) You will receive a monthly stipend to cover transport and basic expenses. Please note as the volunteer position is not part of the regular EPRC staff structure, you will not receive health insurance cover or any other related benefits provided to the regular staff.


Selection Criteria:
Applicants must have completed their Master’s degree in Economics or related fields and have shown ability to conduct research on developing economies. Candidates should be fluent in oral and written English and possess good quantitative and/or qualitative analytical skills. The volunteer Programme is highly competitive and only a limited number of volunteers can be accepted.
