The Economic Policy Research Centre (EPRC) is Uganda’s leading economics research institution. Its mandate is to provide research and other forms of analytical support to Uganda’s development process. EPRC uses resources from the Government of Uganda and Think Tank Initiative (TTI) under the International Development Research Centre (IDRC). The Centre will be providing Internship Opportunities for continuing university students who have completed their second or are in final year of study with minimum Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA = 4).

EIGHT (8) INTERNSHIP OPENINGS AVAILABLE FOR UNDERGRADUATE STUDENTS IN RESEARCH, ICT, INFORMATION MANAGEMENT & DISSEMINATION AND FINANCE DEPARTMENTS

1. Department:     Research Function
Number of openings: Four (4)
Disciplines: Economics, Quantitative Economics, Agricultural Economics, Statistics, Development Economics
Reports to: Respective Research Unit Head

Minimum required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): 4
Main purpose: To assist students to gain practical knowledge, enhance skills and capacities of students in economic research and policy analysis.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The intern shall assist in-house researchers in a variety of research and analysis tasks including:

  1. Collection and preparation of data from surveys and administrative information systems;
  2. Performing basic analysis and coding of survey instruments;
  3. Conducting literature searches, downloading and preparing data for analysis;
  4. Assist in organizing and analyzing data using statistical software, e.g. STATA or SAS; SPSS; excel, Eviews,
  5. Assist in presenting research data in different forms such as charts, graphs, maps, or reports; or other visualization methods; analyzing facts and information
  6. Providing general administrative project support;

Qualifications
Should be continuing students in the course of finalizing the second year of study towards achievement of a bachelor’s degree in Economics, Agriculture Economics, Quantitative Economics, Statistics, and Development Economics;

Desirable Skills and Competencies
a) Computer literate with ability to work with Microsoft Office, STATA, Eviews, some knowledge of any other analysis software shall be added advantage;
b) Should have good communication skills (verbal and written) and good interpersonal skills
c) Should be willing to learn and work in a team
d) Should be willing to work under tight timelines

2. Department:     Information Management & Dissemination Department
Number of openings: Three (3). One in Communication, one in Library and Information Science and One in ICT.
Disciplines: Communication, ICT, Library and Information Science, Records Management, Librarianship, Documentation, Records Management
Reports to: Programmes Manager & ICT Specialist

Communications Internship (1):
Minimum required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): 3.5
Main purpose: To enhance the skills and capacities of students in policy engagement and communications in research entities through exposure and participation in the day to day running of Information Management and Dissemination Unit. This will involve organizing and promoting events, media relations, writing for social media platforms and the website.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The intern will be supporting Information Management and Dissemination Unit substantively and will be responsible for carrying out the following:

  1. Assist in organizing press conferences, meetings, briefings and other PR events by EPRC; send out invitations, follow up with potential delegates, confirm attendance at various workshops and conferences, assist with registration and general arrangements at conferences
  2. Provide media relations support to events organized by EPRC; set up interviews to market upcoming events and send out media alerts
  3. Draft in English media advisories, press releases, press reviews, talking points, statements, news stories, etc. as required
  4. Develop story ideas on EPRC projects; research and interview sources for project stories; and draft stories within deadlines.
  5. Update on a regular basis EPRC’s website and other social media platforms (facebook, twitter, youtube, blogspot etc.) with relevant EPRC news and events;
  6. Assist in taking photos for media coverage and archiving;
  7. Update and maintain the Centre’s Contacts Database
  8. Attend events as required and represent the organization in a professional manner in liaisons with clients and the public
  9. Assist in other ad-hoc activities as instructed.

Qualifications:
Should have completed or in the course of finalizing the second year towards achievement of a bachelor’s degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, Literature, Media.

Library Internship (1):
Minimum required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): 3.5
Main purpose: To enhance the skills and capacities of students in library organization and management through practical exposure and participation in the day-to- day running of the Uganda Development Information Centre (UDIC). This will involve assisting in processing and disseminating information to the UDIC users, both internal (EPRC staff) and external

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist in recording, classifying and cataloguing the documents and materials in the UDIC in line with the Centre’s systems and procedures.
  2. Assist with arranging (coding, shelving and displaying) information materials in the UDIC.
  3. Provide reference services and guidance to EPRC staff and UDIC patrons
  4. Respond to requests from walk-in visitors and help them to locate items and library materials.
  5. Assist in identifying, sorting and compiling materials and documents that require repair, binding and weeding in accordance with the set procedures
  6. Assist in organizing book exhibitions and other UDIC outreach events
  7. Scan periodicals’ and newspaper articles and package the information in formats that ease storage and access.
  8. Assist with data entry and updating of the Centre’s databases, e.g. the Contacts and Media Monitoring Databases.
  9. Participate in any other special projects as may be required.

Qualifications and Experience

  1. Should have completed or in the course of finalizing the second year towards achievement of a bachelor’s degree in Information Science, Librarianship, Records Management or a related discipline and
  2. Basic skills in using the KOHA Library Integrated Software to enter data and manage records shall be added advantage.

Desirable Skills and Competencies

  1. Computer literate with ability to work with Microsoft Word, Excel and Power Point.
  2. Knowledgeable on how to use at least one library information system and with ability to browse and use Internet based resources.
  3. Should be courteous and with excellent communication skills (verbal, written and interpersonal)
  4. Willing to learn and work in a team.

 

ICT Internship: (1)

Minimum required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): 3.5
Main purpose: To enhance the skills and capabilities of students in Information Communication Technology through practical exposure and participation in the day-to-day running of the ICT function of the Centre. This will involve assisting in the design, documentation and troubleshooting of IT related functions for both Internal (EPRC Staff) and external users as catered for by the existing ICT Policy.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Assist in daily User Support to EPRC Staff
  2. Assist in redesign, implementation, labeling and documentation of the physical network.
  3. Assist in design, implementation and documentation of a suitable backup function for the Centre to support its existing and near future ICT Setup.
  4. Assist in reconfiguration and roll-out of services on the existing Windows Server 2012.
  5. Assist in the design, implementation and documentation of in-house services like a Ticketing system, a primer to automated documents, among others
  6. Assist in basic design and updates to our main website + affiliates and social media services.
  7. Assist in the design, implementation and documentation of an Intranet.
  8. Assist in the design, implementation and documentation of a Voice over IP system for the Centre
  9. Take on any other duties as will be assigned within the Department

Qualifications and Experience

  1. Should have completed or in the course of finalizing the second year towards achievement of a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Software Engineering, Information Systems or a closely related discipline, and
  2. Basic skills in website design, configuring CISCO IOS Devices and Windows Server 2012 shall be added advantage.

3. Department:     Finance Function

Number of openings: One (1)
Disciplines: BCOM, BBA & BSC Accounting
Reports to: Finance Manager

Minimum required Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA): 4
Main purpose: To enrich the skills and capabilities of the students through practical knowledge and exposure in accounting and finance discipline with a multi donor settings

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
The intern shall assist the Finance Unit in;

  1. The management of the filing system and stamping of documents
  2. Reviewing accountabilities submitted for completed activities
  3. Reviewing outstanding obligation & ensuring completeness before submission for approval
  4. Reconciliation of Accounts payables, Accounts Receivables and Petty Cash
  5. The preparation of the payment schedules
  6. The preparation of petty cash payment vouchers
  7. Take on any other duties as will be assigned within the Department

Qualifications and Experience

Should be continuing students in the course of finalizing the second year of study towards achievement of a bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance.

Desirable Skills and Competencies

  1. Computer literate with ability to work with Microsoft word, Microsoft Excel.
  2. Should have good communication skills (verbal and written) and good interpersonal skills
  3. Should be willing to learn and work in a team

Internship placements at EPRC are for a period not exceeding three (3) months from June- August. EPRC does not offer any remuneration or transport facilitation to interns.
